Status Yellow and flood warning in place for five counties

Sarah Finnan

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning for five counties this morning, advising that heavy rainfall and spot flooding are on the way. Between 30 to 50mm of rain is expected to fall overnight – with higher amounts predicted in mountainous areas.

Motorists are also being warned to expected reduced visibility and hazardous driving condition. Issued this morning for Galway,  Mayo, Cork, Kerry and Waterford, the warning is valid from 6pm this evening until 6pm on Wednesday.

Here’s what Met Éireann forecasters predict for the tonight and tomorrow:

“Rain will spread countrywide tonight, with some heavy falls, bringing a risk of localised spot flooding. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 11 degrees with strong southerly winds developing.

“Tomorrow, Wednesday, will be a wet and windy day with a continued risk of localised spot flooding. Strong and gusty southerly winds will veer westerly as conditions improve from the west later in the day. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees.”

With much of the country already having experienced heavy rainfall in recent weeks, the threat of further localised flooding is huge cause for concern – particularly to local businesses who are already struggling to make ends meet.
