The ruling council and Comhairle will meet in Dublin to make the final decision.
According to Independent.ie, EU MEP Liadh Ní Riada is heavily tipped to be the candidate to contest the election for the party.
Four other candidates will also contest next month’s election including incumbent President Michael D Higgins.
The other three candidates include two businessman Gavin Duffy and Sean Gallagher who were both previously on Dragons Den.
