A search and rescue operation has been launched to find a hillwalker who went missing yesterday afternoon in the Maamturk Mountains, Co Galway.
The man, who is in his 50s and is from Dublin, has been described as an “experienced” hillwalker, according to The Journal.
He was last in contact with a member of his family at 4.30pm yesterday afternoon, and the Galway Mountain Rescue Team (GMRT) were first alerted at 10.30am this morning.
His last known location was a place known locally as the Col of Despondency, situated in the Maamturk Mountains close to Leenane.
Clifden Guardai and local landowners have joined in the search, however due to poor weather conditions and low visibility it’s unsuitable for helicopter operations, meaning that a ground search could take some time.
