Irish Taxi Fares Could Rise By Almost Five Per Cent in 2020

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has revealed plans to increase taxi fares by 4.5% due to the rise in the cost of running a taxi service.

According to the National Maximum Taxi Fare Review Report 2019, which was published today, the cost of running a taxi service has increased by about 4% since the last fare review in 2017.

Along with the increased fares, the report also proposes that all taxis will be required to have card payment facilities. No more having to queue up for an ATM post-nightclub.

The changes would come into effect early next year. The proposal for an increase in maximum fares covers the cost of operating a taxi as well as the cost associated with the provision of card payment facilities.

However, the public is being asked to let their views be heard on the matter and can be done online via the consultation section of the NTA website, via email or by post.

A public consultation is open until October 29 and the matter will then be passed over to the NTA for consideration.
