A Central American tarantula has been found in a bunch of bananas in Donegal

The ISPCA have reported that a stowaway Mexican red rump tarantula has made its way to Donegal from Central America via a bunch of bananas.

The runaway tarantula was discovered hiding in the bunch of bananas by a member of the public who alerted the ISPCA. The fruit had been purchased in a local supermarket in Donegal and since being found, the unusual visitor has been named Parker.

Identified as a Mexican red rump, the tarantula is thought to be relatively harmless and is estimated to be about four months old. The ISPCA has said that it can’t be determined whether it is male or female until it matures into adulthood.

The #ISPCA came to the rescue following an urgent call for help, when a small #Tarantula was found hiding in some recently purchased fruit, by a member of the public.

Speaking about Parker’s discovery, ISPCA Centre Manager Denise McCausland said:  “Parker was carefully captured and transferred in a secure box before being admitted to the ISPCA ARC for a closer inspection.  A veterinary examination confirmed that Parker was very dehydrated and lethargic after his travels but after some water and mini crickets to eat, he began to perk up very quickly.”

Denise added that after monitoring Parker for a number of weeks, the tarantula had “already grown in size and is continuously spinning elaborate webs.” She added that Parker is “thriving well”.
