After months of anticipation, sneak peeks and nostalgic Smash Hits inspired magazines covers, Derry Girls fans were finally treated to the first instalment of season 3 last night.
And between celeb cameos and a trailblazing performance from Uncle Colm, episode 1 certainly did not disappoint.
Underworld! Liam Neeson! Mid-1990s League of Ireland shirts! Alka Seltzer! Jack Charlton portraits! That was a treat. Welcome back #DerryGirls!

As always, the parents/grandparents subplot was a work of art, with Seamus the cat (and pet murderer) bringing out Granda’s softer side. As if we weren’t obsessed with him enough already.

An old tweet, but an acutely accurate description of how we all feel.
Sister Michael’s full name reveal, Seamus’s feral tendencies and the fate of Fluffy the bunny were among the highlights for viewers:

But the pièce de résistance had to be the police interrogation scene.
Sure, the surprise cameo from Liam Neeson was exciting:
I'm actually a boy…
OK love….

But Uncle Colm and his ability to overthrow the RUC with his infamous storytelling technique truly stole the show. An Oscar-worthy performance tbh.

I’ve no doubt there’s a real life Diego from Pennyburn type story in Derry 😂 #DerryGirls

Can someone tell me what happened in Derry Girls after Colm arrived at the police station?
I was laughing too hard to hear or see anything for about 5 minutes,,,#DerryGirls— Alan Palmer (@PalmerAlan) April 12, 2022

Uncle Colm is the best written and played character ever on TV. Jesus it’s so accurate.

There were some naysayers who claimed the season 3 premiere was “poor” – but I think we all know the reason behind that kind of behaviour:
Saw someone tweet that tonight’s #DerryGirls episode was very poor. Looked at the location on this persons profile & it made perfect sense then. Cause the episode had me howling laughing pic.twitter.com/lO62FQPSjO

To conclude, if Irish Twitter is anything to go by, we’re all beside ourselves with joy to see Derry Girls back on our screens. We may need to float the idea of a national day of mourning after the final episode airs.
i fucking love derry girls so much. half an hour of easy to watch nostalgia. when this final series ends i’m going into mourning for 40 years like queen victoria.

While you eagerly await episode 2, here’s a shot of Liam Neeson attempting a duckface pout. Obviously.
