Almost 3,000 children in Ireland were homeless last night, according to new figures.
The Department Of Housing has confirmed that 2,777 children were registered as being without a permanent home in May, with 1,312 homeless families.
The Peter McVerry Trust has hit out at the situation, saying that it is “completely unacceptable”.
“In early 2016, the number of homeless children passed the 2,000 mark, and there wasn’t a murmur,” he said.
“We can’t just become used to these homeless figures, and they no longer offend us. We have lost our sense of outrage.We are the 14th wealthiest country in the world – it is absolutely unacceptable that so many people and so many children should be homeless.”
